Regional Club Level
These teams are for athletes with general knowledge of the game and rules. Players understand basic rotational sequences and positions.
Skill levels range from Beginner to Intermediate.
Teams will practice two times per week for approximately 2 hours and will compete in the Club Division of the Arizona Region of USA Volleyball, which provides 6 weekend tournaments each consisting of 3 matches, and several multi-day tournaments during the season each consisting of 5-9 matches, primarily in Arizona. Club teams also have the opportunity to travel once to the Summer Soiree in Southern California. The season runs from November to late June. To avoid conflicts of interest for the club and its members, we do not issue player release forms during the same club season.
Age Classifications: 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18
Level Description: Regional = Club
Club teams are beginner to intermediate, and limited roster spots are available. You must be able to commit to the entire season, which ends in July.
- Tournaments: Holiday Heat, Cactus Classic, Festival Fiesta, and Stars and Stripes.
- Extra Tournaments: Summer Soiree (Ahahiem, California) and Volleyball Festival.
Our goal is the growth and development of these teams. Setting them up to enter our system and further their club careers. Playing in multi-day events provides these teams with an opportunity to develop team-oriented play and chemistry. Even though these are regional, we provided them with an opportunity to join our travel teams in Anaheim, California, in May. Then finish their season in June with the Volleyball Festival. This means that our season does not end until late June or early July.
Characteristics
A beginner to intermediate level volleyball player is still learning the fundamentals of the game and is in the early stages of skill acquisition. This stage focuses on building a strong foundation and technique, understanding the rules, and developing proper court awareness.
Key characteristics include:
1. Skill Level and Technique
- Basic skills in progress: Can perform underhand and overhand serves, forearm passing (bumping), and simple setting, but with frequent faults such as touching the net, crossing the middle line, or poor ball control.
- Inconsistent execution: Passing and setting accuracy are developing; they often rely on sending the ball back over the net without fully controlling it.
- Limited offensive proficiency: Hitting and blocking are being learned, but attacks may lack power, control, and timing.
2. Game Understanding
- Learning the rules: May not yet fully understand all rules or gameplay strategies.
- Basic positioning: Can identify where to move for the ball, but positioning is often reactive rather than strategic.
- Communication: May not consistently communicate with teammates about positioning or play calls.
3. Play Style and Mindset
- Focus on learning: Prioritizes mastering skills over winning; coaches emphasize technique, movement patterns, and 3-contact play over score-based competition.
- Fault-prone rallies: Rallies often end due to player errors rather than opponent attacks.
- Confidence building: Still building confidence; may be more willing to try new techniques, but less consistent in execution.
4. Physical and Mental Traits
- Developing coordination: Hand-eye coordination and footwork are improving, but not yet refined.
- Endurance and mobility: Working on basic strength, speed, and agility to support skill development.
- Resilience: Learning to persevere through repeated attempts and mistakes.
5. Developmental Goals
- Skill acquisition: Mastering passing, setting, hitting, and blocking without major faults.
- Court awareness: Learning to anticipate the ball and move efficiently.
- Team integration: Understanding their role in the team and contributing to plays.
In summary, a beginner developmental-level volleyball player is learning the game, refining basic skills, and building the mental and physical foundation for future growth. They are still in the “learning the game” phase, with room to improve technique, consistency, and understanding of volleyball systems
